Behind the Brand | Lux Tots - Pasadena, California

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Ahyoung, owner of Lux Tots in Pasadena, California for my Behind the Brand series. A few weeks after I moved to Pasadena, Lux Tots opened and I instantly fell in love! I may not have children, but it's only a matter of time until my sisters both do and I cannot wait to spoil them with goodies from this adorable local shop.

Please share a little about yourself and your background.

I reside in La Crescenta, CA  and am a mom to 2 young, energetic boys, Logan (3yrs) and Jett (2yrs). I have always had a love for fashion at a very young age and since then have worked in the industry as a buyer/creative director for about 10 years. I still currently do some design developmental projects for Anthropologie while I run the shop.

What inspired you to start Lux Tots?

When I was pregnant with my first son Logan, as a new young mom, I became very cautious and picky about all the baby products, clothing, and toys I needed to purchase. Not only was design and visual appeal a concern, but also the types of fabrics and materials manufactured used to produce these products. The more and more I looked and researched, I was so overwhelmed with all the mass marketed children's products from all the major big-box stores. I started to expand my search not only in the US, but also to other countries as well, such as the UK in search of unique, great quality products for my boys. That got me thinking to want to open Lux Tots and share my findings with my community and fellow, young parents. So, I guess in a way my boys are my most significant inspiration in starting the shop.

You're a freelance fashion designer, correct? How has your background in fashion influenced your business?

Yes, I currently do design developmental projects for Anthropologie, but for most of my career, I have worked as a buyer and creative director for major fashion retailers. It definitely has helped me in developing relationships with the brands I buy from and curating the right products for my consumers, which are mostly young parents such as myself.

You're also a mom of two little boys. How has being a mom of little ones influenced your business?

I have to say that it definitely is not easy running my own business as a mom with two toddlers. My boys and family, of course come first so I try my best to be the best mother I can be. At times, I do find myself beating myself up considering I want to the best mom, wife, and business woman I can be. But as a believer, I start realising that I have so many blessings in my life and definitely have the Lord to thank for that!

I love the way your shop is so perfectly curated. Do you have a process for selecting the items you carry in your shop? Or is it more of a random selection?

I definitely like to carry products that are very gift-able. I believe that my products make the perfect gifts for baby showers, birthdays, or even just because! I have also used and have most of the products that I carry here at the shop. As for the girls products, I have so much fun since I get to pretend that I have a daughter as well. =)

What is one thing that you know now that you wish you knew when starting Lux Tots?

I wish I knew the importance of marketing for when you start your own business! Honestly, I am a bit of an introvert and never really was good at keeping up with all the social media platforms that exist today. Thankfully, I'm meeting some great people within the community and learning every day.

Can you give one piece of advice to someone looking to start their own business?

A lot of the times, I had to work at night after I put the kiddos to bed so definitely I have to say takes great dedication and hard work. Along with that, one piece of advice that I have is get the word out even before you officially launch! Tell your friends and family your story and the reason in starting your new venture. Not only does it help get the word out, it also helps you build more confidence in getting your business started.

What is your favorite thing to do with your family outside of work?

Going to the beach! No surprise there, as my husband and I have been raised in Cali all our lives. Our love for California has definitely been genetically passed down to our boys. Whenever we take a trip out to the beach, it takes us quite some time and persuasion to get them back into the car as they never want to leave! Also, our beach trips get even better when our close friends join us. We are really blessed to have a great circle of friends who also have young children such as ourselves. We all take turns every week to host dinner and it's all about great food and great company!

I loved learning a little more about one of my favorite local shops. If you're in the area, be sure to stop by and say hi to the lovely ladies at Lux Tots! In the mean time, you can follow them on Instagram for updates and other fun photos!
